From Data to Decisions – Tools for Digital Viticulture
Digital viticulture comprises the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data on vine growth and canopy health, vineyard productivity, fruit development and maturity, and other parameters in real-time, enabling growers to make more informed management decisions. Recent advancements in digital tools can help growers optimize key vineyard inputs including soil amendments, fertilizers, and irrigation requirements, as well as track crop development and improve the accuracy of yield estimates.

Dr. Nick Dokoozlian is the Vice President of Winegrowing Research at E&J Gallo Winery in Modesto, CA. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Vineyard Foundation, serves as the Research Chair of the National Grape and Wine Initiative, and is an Associate Editor of the American Journal of Enology and Viticulture. Prior to joining E&J Gallo, Dokoozlian was a member of the Department of Viticulture and Enology at the University of California, Davis. Dokoozlian received his PhD in Plant Physiology from the University of California, Davis.

Terry Bates

Dr. Terry Bates is a Senior Research Associate in the Cornell School of Integrative Plant Science and the Director of the Cornell Lake Erie Research and Extension Laboratory, a 50-acre production research vineyard in the Lake Erie American Viticultural Area. Dr. Bates has 25 years of experience in vineyard mechanization, including mechanical grapevine pruning, shoot thinning, fruit thinning, and harvesting. His current research program integrates agricultural sensors, spatial data processing, and variable-rate mechanization for precision vineyard management.
Luca Brillante

Dr. Luca Brillante holds the esteemed Bronco Wine Co. Chair in Viticulture and serves as an Associate Professor of Viticulture at Fresno State. He is a pioneering figure in precision and computational viticulture. With a prolific research portfolio, he has published 44 peer-reviewed articles, secured an international patent, and presented at over 90 scientific conferences. Dr. Brillante’s expertise extends to editorial roles in international peer-reviewed publications.
His career began in viticulture and winemaking, including a stint at Chateau Mouton-Rothschild. His academic journey led to a joint Master in Bordeaux, Montpellier, and Torino and a Ph.D. in Burgundy, focused on ecophysiological analysis through artificial intelligence methods. Subsequently, he conducted post-doctoral research at CREA in Conegliano, Italy, and UC Davis.
In 2018, he joined Fresno State, where he leads a state-of-the-art research lab in precision and digital viticulture. He’s dedicated to developing innovative sensor technology, optimizing vineyard sustainability and efficiency, and addressing contemporary challenges like climate change and labor availability.
Mason Earles

Mason Earles is an Assistant Professor at UC Davis, Co-Leaf at the National AI Institute for Food Systems (AIFS), and CTO/Co-Founder of Scout. His research and industry work focuses on building new AI-enabled tools to help make the grape, agriculture, and food systems more efficient and sustainable.
